The Mayans May Very Well Have Gotten it Right

Throughout the ages, powerful and inspiring thoughts have been presevered and handed down by the medium of legend, the fable, and the fantasy.

The folklore of the Mayans has origins in the calendar, the indisputable instrument for measuring time. The way we frame, react and prioritize time impacts everything about our lives, including the patterns of our natural behavior.

The Mayan calendar captures the date, December 21, 2012, as the day in which our planet experiences the end of a great era.

Now that the year 2012 has arrived, it seems clear that the Mayan culture, and particularly the Mayan calendar, will be a huge topic of discussion for the remainder of the year. One thing is certain; our global society is in the midst of great change in the year 2012.

The Daily Mail declared on January 1, 2012, that the year 2012 “could be the most frightening year in living history.”

Consider how the past few decades have changed our global society in a way that no one alive today could have predicted. Consider how past and current global events could make 2012 the end of a great era.

Start with the overthrow of the Shah of Iran in the 1970′s. It was originally initiated by a group of young middle class students seeking individual freedoms and greater opportunities. The students, like the Chinese students in the Tiananmen Square protests wanted nothing more than those freedoms that were granted to us by God–the right to the pursuit of happiness, the freedom of worship and the right of human dignity.

The point about overthrowing the Shah, and the slaughter of the protestors in China, is that they are representative of actions historically taken by the people against repressive regimes, throughout this Mayan great era. But, they have something else in common—they have also been repeatedly thwarted by brutal dictators, repressive regimes, corrupt politicians and criminals.

If the Mayans are right, that is to say December 21, 2012 is the end of a great era, then we should be able to look back in recent history and recognize early warning signs that great change was near.

With the death of North Korea’s “Dear Leader,” in 2011, the timing is ripe for change in that closed and deprived society. People can only be suppressed for so long and then they will explode. The stage has been set for a revolution in North Korea.

China is the world’s most populated country. If China’s economy falters in 2012 as a result of plunging exports, the government will not be able to continue to provide employment opportunities for its middle class people.

China’s government is a repressive communist regime with a massive, illiterate and poor population.  As China’s economic growth stalls, members of the middle class will be facing a return to poverty. With a disgruntled middle and poverty class, the stage is set for a new revolution in China.

For the past few years, Putin has ruled Russia as if it were his own personal playground. Putin flaunted his power, punished his enemies and acquired immense wealth at the expense of the people. His return to power is certain. But the proud Russian people have tasted freedom and it is doubtful they will allow Putin to restore a dictatorship. The stage has been set for a revolution in Russia.

The United States of America is also is dire trouble. If our nation cannot find a way to reduce the mountainous debt, there exists the real possibility that our economy will not be able to recover. If that should happen, inflation will rise, the dollar will collapse, and the middle class will suffer an economic threat far worse than that caused by the Great Depression. It is possible that the people will take to the streets.

The Mayans clearly had no way of predicting these specific events. But it seems possible that they were connected to Mother Earth in a way that we cannot comprehend. Perhaps they understood that the end of great era means the end of unbelievable human suffering caused by corrupt leaders who have no respect for individual freedoms and human dignity.

Could it be that this new era is made possible, not by the power of the military, but by the power of the people who are in harmony with the power of Mother Earth, with God, and with the inner voice of their hearts?

And, if we look at the events of the past few thousand years, we can easily see a pattern of death and corruption in the name of religion, in the name of false gods, and in the quest for money and power.

If the end of a great era of vanity and greed, means the beginning of a new era of peace and harmony, where mankind connects with the inner voice in our hearts and with Mother Nature, then December 21, 2012 would be the beginning of something very beautiful.
